When you’re fortunate enough to have a flexible exterior space to work with when designing your home, the directions that you can go in are naturally going to be limited by what kind of space that you’re talking about. Sometimes, you’ll have access to gardening options, and a more closed off, quiet space can help to encourage that direction. Other times, though, it might make more sense to focus on decking or something similar, allowing it to flourish more as a social environment. This could be a priority you take if your outside space is situated on a roof or balcony.
Enjoy Spending Time There
Whether it’s a space to be cultivated or one to be socialized in, you need to make sure that it’s comfortable. If you’ve gone through all of the effort of gardening until you’re happy with your own slice of paradise, you might think carefully about what kinds of garden furniture you’ll include and where you’ll put it. You might want to keep it separate from your garden efforts so that you don’t interfere with it and are able to view it from a distance, or you might situate it in the middle of it all so that you feel immersed in nature.
Alternatively, if your outside space is one that’s all about the decking and non-green materials, then making sure that seats are cushioned or well-heated might be a good way to start. On balconies or roofs, you might also consider having glass railings installed so that you’re afforded as much of a view as possible.
Find the Right Events
You also might want to make sure that you’re getting enough use out of this space – especially after you’ve gone through all the effort of establishing it in the first place. As mentioned before, it might be that the only purpose you had in mind for it is gardening – in which case, that’s something that you can periodically undertake yourself whenever the weather allows for it.
If you are hoping to turn this space into something more social, however, it might be that you also acquire a barbecue set or a grill that can allow you to regularly find a reason to come outside with your friends. This also gives you something seasonal to look forward to, even if that means you just use your space for something more low-key in winter, like becoming a cozy reading nook.
Maintenance
Unfortunately, you might find that it’s never something that you can just leave to be complete because it might always require some form of maintenance. When it comes to a natural space, you might not want it to become too overgrown, or you might want to consistently make changes or additions. This might not be such an issue with a more artificial space, but it could still be prone to damage and debris that make it necessary to clean regularly. While this can be frustrating, during colder parts of the year, it can have the silver lining of providing you with a way to go outside when you might otherwise be tempted not to.
